Introduction
Weight management is an essential aspect of health and hunting. When discussing weight management, we can talk about two different aspects of weight. First, we can talk about the weight of our gear. Carrying too much weight in your pack can reduce your stamina and endurance, increase strain on your body, and increase your energy expenditure. More weight means less time in the backcountry due to lack of energy and risk of injury.
The second part of weight management is our own body weight. Similar to carrying excessive weight in your pack, carrying too much weight on your body can strain your knees, joints, muscles, and bones. Being overweight or obese, simply carrying more weight, can significantly hamper your ability to hike, climb mountains, and get into position, leading to fatigue and injury.
This chapter will help you manage your weight and understand how weight management is critical to your MFRS.
