Running Is Not Hiking
I want to finish by jumping into sport-specific training. Running is simply not hiking... I agree! There is no better way to prepare for a specific task than to do that specific task. Now, if you want to get good at hiking, simply get out and hike.
Hike 2-3x/week and hike multiple days in a row. Hike more if you can. Be sure to take a rest day after a long hike, big gains, or rough terrain. We are in the business of preventing injuries, although it is important to accustom yourself to that as that is what you will be hunting in.
Hike at elevation and wear a pack.
Be sport-specific; if you want to get good at hiking, then simply go for a hike!
